Kiki Smith: Lot's Wife

Lot's Wife. Kiki Smith, Courtesy Pace Wildenstein, New York

Kiki Smith is fond of certain women for the mistakes they make. Lot's wife, looking back in spite of prohibition from god's messengers and lusting for what she has to leave behind; Mary Magdalene, the sinner banished to the wilderness for her repeated failings of the flesh; or Lilith, the first female prototype in the bible, the first of many women to be expelled.

She re-imagines traditional images of women and i like this sculpture of Lot's Wife, for its sympathetic portrayal of the biblical character. Her sorrowful head turned back, to her past and her people, covered in part with real salt. It evokes empathy from the viewer for Lot's wife, even if God punished her.
