JH Engström
All images by JH Engström and taken mostly from the book Trying To Dance.
I’m always looking for presence.
Whenever I try, my doubts get unmasked.
Easier then to stick with absence.
I’m not trying to prove anything.
I don't have that many memories yet.

Art of Block Printing
I found this little gem on honestlywtf. The film was produced by West Elm after meeting hand-block printing artisans on a recent trip to northern India’s Rajasthan. The process is so intricate and beautiful...I'm itching to have a go!

I'm a bit of a hoarder and collections of odd things always catch my attention. I think these door hangers, seen together, are strangely beautiful. To find out more about the collection and collector click here

The magazine room in the library at college is one of my favourite places to waste time...this is what i came across in Cabinet Magazine recently.
"The images above illustrate the results of an unusual artistic collaboration between the French artist Hubert Duprat and a group of caddis fly larvae. A small winged insect belonging to the order Trichoptera and closely related to the butterfly, caddis flies live near streams and ponds and produce aquatic larvae that protect their developing bodies by manufacturing sheaths, or cases, spun from silk and incorporating substances—grains of sand, particles of mineral or plant material, bits of fish bone or crustacean shell—readily available in their benthic ecosystem. The larvae are remarkably adaptable: if other suitable materials are introduced into their environment, they will often incorporate those as well."I think the larvae fly have a good eye for jewellery design...you can see them at work here.

"I am convinced that most people do not grow up… We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies, and on our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are innocent and shy as Magnolias."

El Anatsui

In The Cloth series El Anatsui pursues the themes of memory and loss in his sculpture, especially the damage wrought by the colonial period and traumatic post-colonial aftermath. He uses cloth as a metaphor for both the fragility and the dynamism and strength of tradition. Since 1999 Anatsui has woven the debris of daily life and consumerist excess into glittering, monumental wall sculptures. I think they are beautiful.
