Going Home the Longest Way Around

We tell stories, build
from fragments of our lives
maps to guide us to each other.
We make collages of the way
it might have been
had it been as we remembered,
as we think perhaps it was,
tallying in our middle age
diminishing returns.
Last night the lake was still;
all along the shoreline
bright pencil marks of light, and
children in the dark canoe pleading
“Tell us scary stories.”
Fingers trailing in the water,
I said someone I loved who died
told me in a dream
to not be lonely, told me
not to ever be afraid.
And they were silent, the children,
listening to the water
lick the sides of the canoe.
It’s what we love the most
can make us most afraid, can make us
for the first time understand
how we are rocking in a dark boat on the water,
taking the long way home.

Let your hair down this weekend...

...and make sure to leave time for a good breakfast in the morning before you go out to play!

"Above all else, it is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here. I was hungry. I was defeted. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that's why I made works of art."

“I haven't much time to be fond of anything ... but when I have a moment's fondness to bestow, most times ... the roses get it. I began my life among them in my father's nursery garden, and I shall end my life among them, if I can. Yes. One of these days (please God) I shall retire from catching thieves, and try my hand at growing roses.”

Libra: If you’ve been feeling a little lost, a little off-balance, a little bit out of orbit, things are going to swing back into place this week, they’re going to shift back into focus, they’re going to get sharp and bright and good again. Let this feeling carry you—spend your days outside, spend your days moving, spend your days talking and working and asking the questions that make your brain buzz and your heart sing. Trust yourself to live right this week, trust your own choices, listen to songs about solitude and songs about triumph.

Demonstration

between them is
nothing
a nothing that is made
and is never perfect
the sight in an empty socket at night
the everlasting decision
approaching the point of origin
the first fire
still without color
exploding inward
drawing the unlit firmaments after it

By now you must have guessed: I come from another planet. But I will never say to you, Take me to your leaders. Even I - unused to your ways though I am - would never make that mistake. We ourselves have such beings among us, made of cogs, pieces of paper, small disks of shiny metal, scraps of coloured cloth. I do not need to encounter more of them. Instead I will say, Take me to your trees. Take me to your breakfasts, your sunsets, your bad dreams, your shoes, your nouns. Take me to your fingers; take me to your deaths. These are worth it. These are what I have come for.
